GEO vs SEO vs AEO vs LLMO: the terminology, explained

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) optimizes for ranking in a list of links. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) optimizes for winning the single featured answer or snippet. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) are near-synonyms for optimizing to be surfaced and cited inside AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. The vocabulary is new and fragmented, but the mechanics converge on the same thing: crawlable, structured, corroborated, quotable content.
